The 50 Best Cheese Recipes From the 50 Best United States

January 20th is National Cheese Lover's Day, so we knew we had to do it up in style. We decided to show our love for both cheese and our nation by compiling a list of amazing cheese dishes that showcase each state.

Louisiana: Cheesy Oysters Rockefeller If you didn't think you could mix cheese with some of Louisiana's finest seafood, think again. Or rather, stop thinking and start reading this recipe. Don't forget to grab some Parm before you hit Bourbon Street!

Utah: Funeral Potatoes

Chances are, if you didn't grow up in Utah or attend any Mormon potlucks, you're not familiar with funeral potatoes. Well don't let the name fool you because now is a time to celebrate. You have now been introduced to a creamy, cheesy, cornflake/potato chip covered pan of delight.

Arkansas: Cheese Dip

Little known fact: the denizens of the United States (and the world) have Arkansas to thank for the invention of cheese dip. Follow the trail for yourself, or simply make it at home.

Washington: Apple Pie

Johnny Appleseed must have gone hog-wild in Washington, since they alone account for 70% of U.S. apple production. So obviously Washingtonians love their apples, what could a more American way to celebrate that than by making an apple pie? How about making a cheddar cheese filled apple pie?!

Mississippi: Cheese Straws

When we see Mississippi, we can't help but think all the I's look like little cheese straws. This southern style recipe from Girl Versus Dough is our favorite way to represent the state we all have the most fun spelling.

Maine: Crab and Gouda Stuffed Mushrooms

Maine knows good seafood. We know cheese and seafood can actually get along. We didn't know there was a Home Alone 5 and it took place in Maine. Add all that together and you get these cheese and crab stuffed mushrooms from Peas and Crayons plus something to watch tonight.

Texas: Ham and Cheese Kolache

What started as a traditional Czech dish has become a Texas breakfast staple. Everyone will want to mess with this recipe from Confections of a Foodie Bride.

West Virginia: Pepperoni Rolls

If you're from West Virginia, you knew these were coming. What started as a simple meal for miners has become a statewide, and hopefully nationwide, obsession.

This casserole from Madame Deals doesn't say Tennessee, it screams it. With meat, veggies, tater tots, and cheese, it's guaranteed to keep cowboys and cowgirls across the country satisfied.

Pennsylvania: Cheesesteak

Let's put aside the debate of who makes the best cheesesteak in Philadelphia for a moment and just appreciate that as much as others have tried, you can't beat Philly for a classic cheesesteak.

South Carolina: Shrimp and Cheese Grits

Unsophisticook has captured South Carolina, and the entire South really, with this spicy, cheesy shrimp and grits combo.

Don't sleep on the smallest state in the Union. They know how to bring it when it comes to state sponsored cheese dishes. Everyone by the bay knows and loves pizza strips, and you can too with this recipe from The Mod Mommy.

Maryland: 3 Cheese Crab Dip

If we wrote Wedding Crashers, those annoying prep guys would have yelled, "3 Cheese Crab Dip and football, that's what Maryland does!"

Georgia: Pimento Cheese Sandwich

When you think Georgia, you think genteel Southern living, and there’s nothing more properly Southern than a pimento cheese sandwich cut into fours and served as a snack at afternoon tea (sweet tea, of course). Mosey on over to Plain Chicken for the recipe.

Ohio: Cincinnati Chili
We're not sure which Buckeye officially piled chili on spaghetti first, but whoever it was is a state and national hero. This recipe from Cinnamon Spice & Everything Nice is a midwest original that everyone will enjoy.

New Mexico: Green Chile Cheeseburger

You can't be from New Mexico and not love green chiles (it's the law). OK not really, but green chiles are seriously a star in New Mexican cuisine. The Perfect Pantry shows how they're right at home in a cheeseburger.

Nevada: Buffet

So maybe it’s a cop out, but let’s face it: when you think about Nevada, you think about Vegas, and when you think about Vegas, you’re thinking: BUFFET. So while Nevada may not have an official “state food,” you can get the best of all cheese worlds by hitting the buffets. Mac and cheese, cheese pizza, cheesy mashed potatoes, cheesecake...pardon my drooling, but I have to go to Vegas now.

Oregon: Blackberry Cream Cheese Pie
When you’re not out hiking, drinking coffee, or enjoying the Pacific greenery in general, you’re probably harvesting your own backyard blackberries to make a homemade tasty cream cheese pie berry pie like this. It’s rugged and somehow urban at the same time. How "woods to table" of you.

Florida: Cuban Sandwich

Some say that no visit to Tampa or Miami is complete without consuming a Cuban sandwich, often referred to by its Spanish term, “The Cubano.” Born of the state’s close relationship to its Latino neighbor to the east, we’re on board with any sandwich that marries ham, roast pork, pickles and CHEESE. Read more about the history of this amazing sandwich here.

Illinois: Deep Dish Pizza

Chicago and deep dish pizza go together like pizza and Italy, which makes sense, because two entrepreneurial Italian immigrants are responsible for creating the iconic dish in 1943. Make your own with this recipe from Sally’s Baking Addiction here.

Kentucky: Hot Brown Bites

The Derby. Bourbon. Mint juleps. Hot brown bites. Didn’t catch that last one? It’s a Kentucky original created at The Brown Hotel in the 1920s. It’s basically an open-faced turkey sandwich with bacon and a Mornay sauce (that means melted, delicious cheese sauce in French). This miniature version from Plain Chicken makes a great party appetizer and does the Bluegrass State proud.

South Dakota: Kuchen

Ever heard of a kuchen? It’s the German word for cake, and it’s the designated state dessert of South Dakota, thanks to the German immigrants who settled there way back when. Though there are lots of variations for kuchen, we think the ones with cottage cheese are pretty sweet.
